How Long it Actually Takes to Create an Estate Plan

Most people assume that estate planning is something that takes countless hours with an attorney and months to complete. In reality, the amount of time you will likely spend creating an estate plan is less than the time it takes to watch a football game.

While it does take your attorney time to create your estate plan, the total amount of time that you will spend in meetings is typically just a couple of hours. The biggest “time hurdle” is often just making decisions (like who you’d want as a guardian or executor), and not the process itself.

Don’t believe us? Here are a few reasons why estate planning can be quick and easy!

1. You’re Probably More Prepared Than You Realize

Much of the “information gathering” people dread (bank accounts, deeds etc) is already organized through online banking, retirement accounts, or insurance paperwork. A good attorney will guide you on exactly what’s needed, so you’re not having to go on a scavenger hunt for things that you do not need.

At Linville Estate Law, we gather the information that we need through a quick online intake questionnaire. It just takes about 15 minutes to complete.

“It was a painless process that went quickly and smoothly. I am so glad my family won’t have to deal with probate.” -Deb

2. Most of the Work Isn’t Yours

Once you’ve made key decisions, your attorney will do the heavy lifting — drafting your plan, making it legally valid, and explaining them in plain English. In fact, once you have made a few decisions, all that is left for you to do is to simply review and sign the completed plan.

Also, don’t worry about needing to know legal jargon or “figure it all out” before you begin. Your attorney will make sure that you understand everything and get every question answered

“It was a very well-organized process and didn’t take nearly as much time and debate as I thought that it would.” -Chris

3. You Don’t Have to Do Everything at Once

Estate planning can feel overwhelming because people imagine a massive checklist. The truth is: you can start small.

Even just completing a simple will plan puts you miles ahead of where you were. You can always add onto your estate plan in years to come, but it is better to have something in place than nothing!
