Five years ago today, Linville Estate Law opened its doors.
A lot can change in five years. Team members joined, processes changed, and our office grew. We’ve watched all of that happen here, and we’re proud of it. But we don’t want to talk about what’s changed. We actually want to talk about what hasn’t, because that’s actually the part we’re proudest of.
Here are five things that were true on our first day, and are still true today.
We Still Believe a Plan Has to Actually Work
Not just exist, or look official in a binder. Work, in the way that matters: when your family needs it, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do.
That sounds obvious, but unfortunately it isn’t. We’ve learned that the hard way, sitting across the table with families who came to us holding a plan from elsewhere. It looked complete and felt complete, and yet it still failed them when it mattered most, for reasons that were entirely preventable: a trust that had never been funded, a power of attorney nobody could find, a plan built for a family that no longer looked the same by the time anyone needed it.
We built this firm to close that exact gap. Five years later, that’s still the only standard that matters to us.
We Still Explain Everything in Plain English
Legal jargon doesn’t make a plan stronger. It just makes it harder to understand.

We hold every explanation to the same standard: it should make sense the first time you hear it, no legal background required. If it doesn’t, that’s on us to fix, not on you to figure out.
We don’t just do this out of courtesy. We think of it as protection. A plan you don’t understand is a plan you can’t fully trust. Plain language isn’t the friendly version of estate planning. It’s the version that actually works.
We Still Believe in Patience Over Pressure
We’ve never wanted a call with our office to feel like a sales pitch, and we still don’t.
Whether it’s your first conversation with us or your fifteenth, the pace is set by you, not by us.
Some families are ready to move quickly. Others need a few conversations before anything feels settled, and that’s fine. We’re not in the business of rushing people toward a signature. We’re in the business of making sure that when someone signs, they actually understand what they’re signing and feel good about it.
Five years of sitting across the table from families has only reinforced this belief. The plans that are well understood by our clients are the plans that work best.
We Still Remember There’s a Person Behind Every Plan
Behind every trust, every deed, and every form, there’s a family and a story we’ve had the privilege of hearing. Someone walked through our door for a reason, and that reason is never really about the paperwork.
Maybe they just welcomed a new grandchild and want to make sure that child is provided for. Maybe a health scare gave estate planning more urgency. Maybe they watched a friend struggle through a difficult probate and didn’t want their own family to go through the same thing.
Whatever brought someone to us, it mattered enough to bring them through our door, and we’ve never wanted our process to make anyone feel like a file instead of a person.
Five years of plans hasn’t made that any less true, and it never will.
We Still Show Up, Even After the Documents Are Signed
A plan isn’t done the day it’s signed. It needs funding, the step where we actually move your assets into your trust so it can do its job. It needs updates, as your family and your assets change over the years. And it needs a team that’s still there, long after your last appointment.
That’s been true since day one, and it’s the reason our relationships with clients outlast the meetings. We’d rather answer your call five years from now than disappear the moment the paperwork’s signed.
Some Things Are Worth Keeping Exactly the Same
Five years from now, we hope we’re writing a version of this post that reads almost identically to this one. We hope the team has grown. We hope we’ve helped even more families across Middle Tennessee build plans that work. But we hope these five things are still true, word for word.
Some things shouldn’t change. We plan on making sure these don’t.
Thank you for being part of our first five years, whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or you’re just getting to know us now. We’re grateful for every family who’s trusted us, and we’re looking forward to the next five years.
